The Luxembourg wine metropolis of Grevenmacher is tied to Germany in a variety of ways. For starters, there’s the bridge that spans the river, as well as the “Princesse Marie-Astrid”, a fabled excursion ship that travels back and forth along the Mosel between Schengen and Trier. And then there is the estate of the Bernard-Massard family — international from the very start.
Luxembourg cellar master Jean Bernard-Massard first founded the winery for sparkling wine bearing his name in 1919 in the Palais Pillishof at the heart of Trier.
Two years later he commissioned the construction of a building and massive cellar near the head of the border bridge in Grevenmacher.
Bernard-Massard now produces roughly 3.5 million bottles of sparkling sekt and crémant annually, as well as 500,000 bottles of still wine.
The estate's products can be sampled in its elegant tasting room. Not to be missed: a tour of the expansive cellars.
Tens of thousands of tourists flock each year to Bernard-Massard for an entertaining guided journey through the production of sparkling wines using the ‘méthode traditionelle’ (traditional method of sparkling wine production popularised in Champagne).
