Henri Ruppert wine estate

There’s more to Schengen then just the legendary treaty that eliminated border controls across much of Continental Europe.

The village at tripoint for the three nations is also home to what is perhaps the most European of all wine: winemaker Henri Ruppert owns vineyards not only in Luxembourg, but also in neighbouring villages of both Germany and France.

His winegrowing estate, which towers majestically above the town of Markusberg, is one of the symbols of the Luxembourg Mosel.

This starts with its sublime location — the building can be recognised from the motorway bridge located roughly a kilometre away.

One cannot help but be struck by the extravagant architecture: the vaulted roof of the winery pours forth from the vines like a wave.

The ultra-modern building of exposed aggregate concrete, wood and glass elements was created by architect François Valentiny, whose signature can be seen on many of the region’s finest edifices.

This object is meant to astound and entertain from outside and within, in a wine bar featuring the estate’s prized Riesling, Pinot gris and Pinot noir.

The large terrace offers a majestic view over the Mosel Valley out toward the Stromberg on the French side.

Cellar tours and wine tastings take place every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The duration is approximately 1.5 hours, and the price is €29 per person.

Included in the price are fascinating insights into history and architecture, as well as the tasting of four selected wines.
