Domaine Schumacher-Knepper in Wintrange

A long set of stars leads up to the statue of Saint Donatus, the patron saint of the winemakers here.

From his elevated perch, his gaze sweeps across the Moselle Valley, across the nearby nature preserve of Haff Remich and on to the Lorraine forests in the distance.

The majestic cliffside castle is a lovely excursion destination and is considered one of the finest vineyard sites along Luxembourg's stretch of the Moselle.

Frank Schumacher cultivates his grapes on the treasured hillside above the winemaking village of Wintrange. Together with his sister Martine, the trained oenologist leads Domaine Schuhmacher-Knepper.

Visitors to the family-run estate in this town of roughly 400 near Schengen are greeted by a remarkable wooden cube.  The siblings’ tasting room features oak parquet, raw concrete and tastefully clean interior decoration.

The eye wanders naturally to the wine bottles stacked against the wall, or to other smart details like the inventive lamp made of glowing glass strands above the counter.

Customers from all nations convene below its colourful accents to enjoy the estate’s well-known Rieslings as well as other offerings such as Pinot Gris.
