Things are perpetually buzzing (and humming) in the Wawerner Jesuitenberg vineyard.
Its old stone walls serve as an ideal habitat for rare flora and fauna.
Lizards hide happily amidst the stones, while polypody ferns thrive in its shadows. Its insect hotel is constantly bustling as well.
The existing old building (built in 1964) was extended in 2012 (multi-generational living), as well as the new wine building (events and sales, wine storage, office, guest apartment) and a machine hall with heating center.
The solid wood construction has a high degree of prefabrication and thus enables quick installation on site. In addition, the winery is supplied with heat by biomass such as miscanthus, wood chips and pellets and the rooms are heated by ceiling heating with active clay building boards.
The vineyard here is cultivated by the Dr. Frey wine estate, which also works to preserve the century-old stone walls.
It practices 100% organic agriculture, with no chemical or artificial pesticides or fertilizers used since the mid-90s.
The family-run operation is reviewed annually by an organic auditing authority and is a member of the Ecovin association.
The organic wines from Katharina Frey-Treseler and her husband Cord-Henrich Treseler routinely claim top prizes in competition.
The pair’s unyielding focus is on respect for nature. When looking to expand their farm, these considerations pushed the couple to build their tasting room using solid wood.
It’s an impressive example of preserving tradition while still valuing the future — a philosophy reflected in each glass of their wine.
