Dr. Loosen wine estate

A wine aficionado needs only spot the “Dr. Loosen” on the label and he or she already knows: good things are in store.

The estate's Rieslings are among the most prized on the market.

They've made Ernst Loosen, who took the helm at the Bernkastel estate back in 1988, into an internationally acclaimed winemaker. For good reason, as the trade journal Falstaff noted when it subsequently declared him “Wine Ambassador of the Year”.

Loosen cultivates renowned sites such as the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Treppchen.

His treasures also include the Erdener Prälat, which, despite its minuscule 1.5 hectares, is considered one of the finest vineyards on the Middle Mosel, with ungrafted vines dating back as far as 120 years.

His estate at the foot of the famous Berkasteler Lay vineyard has been in his family's possession for over 200 years.

The elegant visitor centre, by contrast, is brand new. Even so, it was built in a historical style. The vinothek features the columns and ornaments, not to mention rounded archways and vaulted ceilings, of a bygone age.

The estate welcomes visitors, but requests that appointments be arranged in advance. The Loosen team also offers guided wine tastings as well as dinners and corporate events.
