This landmark building at the entrance to the village of Lieser was built by the Puricelli and von Schorlemer families, owners of nearby Château de Lieser and the Würtzberg wine estate in Serrig. The oldest part (left) was built between 1884 and 1887 by the architect Heinrich Theodor Schmidt, while the ground floor of the right wing was built by Mendgen in 1901.
The left wing was built from Mosel schist, while the right wing is constructed from red brick and steel, many elements of which came from the Rheinböller ironworks, which belonged to the owners.
The winery's current building once served several functions for the neighbouring castle: administration, forge, power station, car workshop, petrol station and permanent accommodation for employees. In 1901, Baron von Schorlemer had the region's first power station built here. At the time, two naturally aspirated diesel engines were installed in what is now the wine cellar to generate electricity, which was later used to power the town of Bernkastel-Kues.
The Hugo Hower family of winegrowers bought the property in the 1980s, as the old winery in the heart of the historic village had become too small. It took a decade to transform it into a full-service winery. The new wine cellar was inaugurated in spring 2023. The sculptures inside, created by great-grandfather Hugo Hower, reinforce the family atmosphere.
