Thanisch wine estate

Rustic tasting rooms are out. A growing number of winegrowers along the Mosel are engaging creative architects and designers to establish contemporary platforms for their wines.

Dark, wood-panelled rooms are disappearing in favour of bright settings with smart details that are a balm to the wine lover’s soul.

Winemaker Jörg Thanisch, whose family has been making wine since 1648, has caught this spirit as well.

He arranged for the existing tasting room in Lieser to be remodelled and expanded.

The facade now features floor to ceiling windows, offering visitors a stunning view out over the Mosel Valley.

The bottles are arranged on the shelves like exhibition pieces.

A double-winged door has been redone in glass, providing views not just into the vaulted cellar, but also all the way down to the “treasury”, where the winemaker stores his rarities and other notable bottlings.

The finished tasting room is an attraction in and of itself, with that special something that turns a tasting of the elegantly fruity Thanisch Rieslings into a remarkable experience.

Visitors can also take a tour of the vaulted cellar for fascinating information about wine from the Middle Mosel's best steep vineyards and the founding of the estate.
