Van Volxem wine estate in Wiltingen

The production facilities at the Van Volxem wine estate are an architectural wonder.

With a distinctively South Tyrolean style, they set a new benchmark for Riesling winemaking from the finest sites along the Saar.

The elongated building on the Wiltinger Schlossberg is not only gorgeous, it also fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.

The lake to the front is fed by rainwater off the large roof and framed by slate gardens and wild orchard meadows.

The visitor area rises to two stories, with eight-metre-high panoramic windows stretching to its peaks. Four architects from South Tyrol and an interior designer from Bad Soden were responsible for planning the over 6,800m2 building ensemble, which is framed with shell limestone.

Consistently following the sustainability approach, we pay attention to the utmost conservation of natural resources in all areas of production. The heat is generated by a wood chip plant, which is fed with its own wood chips or wood chips purchased from nearby sawmills. In addition, state-of-the-art refrigeration and air-conditioning technology contributes to energy savings. A photovoltaic system is installed on the main roof, which is unobstructed from the outside. In addition to the systems already installed on the estate’s own roofs in the town centre, it produces enough electricity to supply the free-of-charge electricity dispensers on the visitors' parking lot shaded by plane trees. The water masses obtained on the large roof areas are collected in the pond below the visitor’s farm with natural planting. Dry stone walls, hedges and slate beds with drought-resistant planting contribute to the harmonious integration into the surrounding natural and cultural landscape.

As wines from owner Roman Niewodniczanski climbed into the ranks of the world elite, the estate slowly outgrew its traditional quarters in Wiltingen.

The new construction reflects the estate’s status. On the inside, every touch is world class — the finest natural materials and meticulously planned technology.

Its tower is an especially notable magnet for the eye. Beneath it, a tasting room offers a meeting point for wine fans and professionals, as well as hikers and cyclists.
