Wäistuff Deisermillen (Schlink wine estate)

‘Ongkâf’ – even for Luxembourg natives, the name of Machtum’s world-class site is a head scratcher.

It is believed that the unusual moniker derives from the French term ‘en cave’ (‘in the cellar’) — back in the 19th century, the winery building did actually stand at the foot of the hill.

Not a single stone from that edifice remains, however.

The Schlink-Hoffeld wine estate originally led this vineyard to prominence. In 1911, Jean-Pierre Hoffeld laid the cornerstone for his family’s business - his great-grandson Jean-Marc Schlink is in charge today.

Various awards in international competitions attest to the high quality of the wines and crémants produced by his Wäistuff Deisermill, which enjoys a fine view of the Machtum stretch of the Mosel.

Its modern building, nestled directly against the limestone hills on the banks of the river, contains both a cosy tasting room and cellar.

Swans and ships glide by the panoramic windows and on sunny days the terrace beckons. Small dishes of regional winegrower's fare serve as the perfect complement to any tasting.
