For over forty years now, this Mosel village has been inviting visitors to join it on the third Sunday of July for its “Wënzerdag” (Winemaker’s Day). Thousands of wine fans routinely heed the call.
The twisting alleys are ideally suited for the celebration of the town and its wines.
“Picturesque” barely even scratches the surface of Ehnen's charms.
This medieval winemaking town is no static museum, but has certainly retained a remarkable trove of historical architecture. First on the list is the ‘Casino’, a tower-like Renaissance building that served as a sanctuary for the Dominican order up through 1795.
Or the middle-class houses from the 15th-18th centuries, all gathered around the only round church in all of Luxembourg. It dates back to 1826, when a cupola was added to an existing early Gothic house of worship.
The big magnet for tourists is the wine museum, which is currently being renovated by the architectural offices of Valentiny into a “Centre mosellan”.
The goal is to fuse historical architecture with contemporary designs.
A building well worth seeing, both inside and out.
