Contz-les-Bains, Sierck-les-Bains
Ever go on a hike and cross three national borders without even noticing? It’s not just possible, but likely in the Dreiländereck (Three Country Corner).
Germany's Saarland, France's Lorraine and Luxembourg converge at this tripoint, putting the spirit of the agreement signed in 1985 in Schengen into wonderful practice.
So why visit? For the French joie de vivre, the AOC Moselle winegrowing region and historic walls such as the daunting fortress of the Dukes of Lorraine above the little city of Sierck-les-Bains.
The impressive ruin is a popular excursion destination for citizens of all three nations. Beyond this, the castle offers lovely views over the entire bow in the Moselle and the vine-planted Stromberg on the opposite bank right up to Contz-les-Bains.
Sierck and Contz also celebrate the Feast of St. Jean together every year on 24 June. As many as 15,000 spectators come to experience the spectacle of lights: a burning wheel of wood is rolled down the hill toward the Moselle. If it makes it all the way into the water, it’s considered an omen for a good harvest.
