The river starts as the Moselle in the Vosges Mountains and ends as the Mosel where it meets the Rhine near Koblenz. After winding across almost 300 kilometres within France, its first stop on German soil is Perl.
The town is known for its remarkable Sehndorf district, with fantastic views over the Mosel Valley to complement its pleasant historical centre.
Vineyards surround the winemaking town, which lies along a gentle slope roughly one kilometre from the banks of the river. Nearly 240 people live here, and town life revolves now as ever around the washing fountain.
Lorraine-style farmer houses and narrow streets frame the city's appearance. Among the highlights are the Lady Chapel, built in 1843, and the stations of the cross in the vineyard. Vines grow in the “Sehndorfer Klosterberg” and “Sehndorfer Marienberg”.
Many villages proudly proclaim themselves to be of wondrous beauty. Sehndorf has repeatedly put its claim to the test, winning several village beautification contests.
Yet Sehndorf is anything but a museum village. It is a living place, where people still meet for a chat in front of their house doors. And where any visitor is well advised to try some of the local wines directly from the winegrowers.
