Remerschen – Quarry Lakes and Valentiny’s Legacy

For many citizens of Luxembourg, Remerchen is known primarily as a bathing resort.

When temperatures rise in summer, thousands head to the man-made lake on the “Haff Réimech" nature preserve.

The small winegrowing village is part of the community of Schengen and lies directly on the border to Germany’s Saarland.

It is home to 680 residents, although its most famous inhabitant is architect François Valentiny.  Among his most notable projects are the Luxembourg expo pavilion in Shanghai and the “Tower of Dreams and Desires” in Trier.

Buildings of his design have shaped the face of his home community: this includes the primary school and numerous private houses, as well as the youth hostel, the village square and, of course, his offices.

He also established a quite futuristic landmark in the Biodiversum, a natural conservatory centre which has drawn attention from far beyond the region.

The “Valentiny Foundation” represents another impressive brick in the master craftsman’s significant legacy. The building for the foundation that bears his name is artwork in and of itself: the modern construction stretches like a ship's prow, its cat's eye windows looking toward the street.

The interior contains a permanent exhibit with drawings, models and sculptures from the prolific architect.
