A phenomenal collection of Art Nouveau villas, spanning the breadth and width of the movement, enlivens the town of Traben-Trarbach.
These include the cubic nested Villa Breucker along the banks of the Mosel and its neighbour, the Hotel Bellevue — a prime address then as now.
The meticulously maintained buildings were constructed around 1900 based on plans by Berlin architect Bruno Möhring. It was an ambitious vision and reflected Traben-Trarbach’s status and wealth as one of the most important spots for wine trading anywhere in Europe.
Möhring, a leading Art Nouveau architect, was commissioned to build Traben-Trarbach’s new bridge. His arching iron structure lent the town an air of cosmopolitan sophistication. While it sadly fell victim to the final days of the War, the Brückentor (bridge gate) from 1899 remains the emblem of the community even today. It also houses an exhibit on the work of this master builder who so shaped the character of the town.
The Traben-Trarbach underworld, Mont-Royal, Grevenburg, Art Nouveau buildings, the first electricity plant and thermal tunnels / thermal bath are among the special architectural events.
A tour of notable Art Nouveau locations is also available from the Tourist Information Centre, recounting the remarkable stories behind each individual villa.
