Ürzig: Half-Timbered Spectacle in the Würzgarten

Richly adorned half-timbered houses, cosy wine bars and alleyways so narrow that you’ll fear that even a compact car will wedge in place. This and more awaits in the town marked by the famous “Ürziger Würzgarten” vineyard, as well as dark green forests and a dramatic cliff landscape.

Stand in the vineyard and you’ll be looking almost vertically down on the city. Indeed, Ürzig boasts the highest percentage of steep vineyards of any winegrowing town in Germany.

The historic town centre represents its own sightseeing highlight, with its Catholic Parish Church of St. Maternus and half-timbered houses on the Rathausplatz dating back over 400 years.

Ürzig also has its own special landmark, the Sundial. It is believed that the remains of a former watchtower were relocated to the vineyard sometime in the 18th century. Yet Ürzig has another unique calling card: “Harley & Wein”. The event started over 20 years ago as a gathering of several hundred Harley riders, but has since evolved into a major annual happening.

Well over 2000 fans of the fabled brand travel in on their motorcycles each second weekend of August to participate in the wine festival.
